THE STORY
The truth about pyrite.... 95% of Peruvian Pyrite comes from Huanzala mine in Ancash. Basically 100% of this material has been stolen at night from inside the nickel mines for over 3 decades. Global crystal wholesalers and fine mineral dealers are aware of this, but don't care. In January 2022 the mine denounced a nationwide network of organized crime in connection with drug trafficking to be managing the pyrite trade and asked the Peruvian state prosecutor to investigate and act against this illegal network. Our partners are the only crystal exporters by law that have an exclusive contract for Huanzala pyrite with the mine and do not belong to this criminal network.
Most mining operations in Peru are located on the western slopes of the Andes and in the coastal desert of Peru, being one of the driest deserts on earth with very little plant or animal life to be harmed and with nearly no underground water bodies to be contaminated. Environmental impact therefore in this region is relatively low for Peruvian crystal mining operations. No chemicals or dynamite are used either. Our partners are also doing work to minimize waste in the desert foothills (often used for illegal landfill seen all over the internet with the main culprit being fast fashion) and using any money made from selling reusable waste to recycling companies and using the profits to fund a rainforest reforestation project.
THE CRYSTAL
This beautiful specimen is composed of two minerals: Clear Quartz and Pyrite.
The golden cubes are Pyrite, known as the ‘lucky’ stone. The resemblance of iron pyrite to gold has made it a traditional symbol for money and good luck. It blocks out negative energies and aids strengthening of the mind.
