You didn't make it up, you are psychic

It's hard to know what to trust right now. The world feels so unstable, systems are crumbling, and certainty is in short supply. We've been taught to look outward for answers, for proof, for someone else to tell us what is real, and somewhere along the way trusting yourself stopped feeling sensible and started feeling risky.

And yet, most of us have had moments where we knew something before we could explain it. Remember when you thought of someone you had not spoken to in years and they suddenly appeared back in your life. Or when you felt a situation was about to change before anything actually happened. Or when your body reacted first, with gut feeling, and your mind only caught up later. You probably called it coincidence, being sensitive, or just overthinking.

You did not make it up. Most of us learn pretty quickly to brush those moments aside and carry on. But what if those moments were not random at all?

We caught up with David Petrusich ahead of his upcoming Psychic AF training to talk about exactly this, the subtle beginnings, the confusion, the self doubt, and what happens when you finally learn how to listen.

"After reading for many years, I can assure you there is a whole universe of magic waiting to transform you."

When did you realise you had psychic abilities and how did you feel about it at the time?

At a young age I realised I could sense the emotions of others and often knew the outcome of a situation. I kind of equivilate being young and naturally psychic to being young and naturally queer; no one taught me what being "gay" was, but I just knew I was different -- the same was true for being psychic.

It wasn’t until my teen years that I fully understood I was psychically sensitive. I began meditating regularly and reading the Tarot, and eventually my readings developed to the point where I was getting information through my psychic senses vs. the cards. It was around this time that I also began to speak with spirits and interpret non-physical energies.

Who did you go to for guidance & how did that help?

After leaving Chicago for Denver, I met Audra Garcia and David Stevens who helped develop my psychism and spirit awareness. During that time, I was able to safely explore my abilities within community while I learned from others who have walked the same path. Once I pursued this work full time in 2020, I met other amazing teachers like Michael Mayo and Eileen Davies who’ve helped me develop further mediumistically. After reading for 15 years, I can assure you that there’s a whole Universe of magic waiting to transform you — all you have to do is open up to it.

How do people tend to respond to your identity as a psychic medium?

It truly varies depending where I am in the world! It's rare that I tell someone I've just met about what I do for work. I've learned over the years that not everyone understands the full extent of what it means to be a psychic-medium and that there is a lot of fear and misunderstanding around this work. Even if I can sense that someone would be interested in what I do, I don't always bring it up when I socialize as it can quickly turn an evening of leisure or fun into an impromptu class about the Spirit World! I intentionally like to keep my professional and personal lives separate.

"no one taught me what being "gay" was, but I just knew I was different - the same was true for being psychic."

Does that intersect with other aspects of your identity?

It can at times for sure. Now that I've lived in Seattle for 8 years, people I have never met will say "I've heard of you - you're 'Medium Dave'". Someone started that nickname for me and I can't escape it, ha! (Btw, please don't ever call me 'Dave' 🤪).

How do you respond to people that misunderstand, are afraid of or even judge your psychic abilities?

I listen and observe. If the relationship is important to me and if they are curious, I will gently redirect their understanding of psychism and the Spirit World. Most of the time I change the subject or disengage completely. I'm lucky to live on the West Coast - a region of the U.S. that's rarely judgemental of my profession.

Do you think anything has changed in people's attitudes towards psychic abilities from when you were growing up?

Oh, absolutely, but this truly changes based upon where I am at in the world and the culture of the people I am engaging with. So many people have come out of "the broom closet" the last 15 years and are more interested in learning about the psychic arts which I love!

What advice would you give to someone who is leaning into their psychic abilities?

Learn to differentiate what your mind projects and processes versus from what it can receive psychically or mediumistically. A good psychic-medium has a strong relationship to their mind and understands that the mind will always have moments of fantasy, anxiety, fear, doubt, and desire. I definitely recommend working with a teacher or learning within a psychic development community! I learned on my own for many years and misguided myself in the process. Proper development is a must!

What do you think psychic gifts can offer the world right now?

I think of them as "abilities" or "faculties" rather than "gifts", but I feel they provide clarity, honesty, and inspiration. The Spirit World is always going to tell you what you need to hear, not what you want to hear. I feel a connection to the Spirit World provides faith during these dark times -- that connection is unique for every person though.

How can your psychic AF course support people in developing with psychic abilities?

Psychic AF helps you to explore different aspects of psychism and spirit-awareness so that you can begin to understand your “clairs” (aka: the psychic senses) in a way that shifts your perspective and diminishes your self-doubt. You'll leave feeling like you understand how your intuition communicates with you and how to better connect with your guides. If anyone is curious about hearing more, they should see what some of my previous students are saying.

What do you love about offering this training?

I absolutely love seeing others experience synchronicities and magic. The most rewarding thing as a teacher is to see an entire community have fun and get their minds blown!
